How To Care For Your Skin Before, During, And After A Workout

Only 26% of Singaporeans are physically active three times in a week, according to a National Health Survey. One of the exercises these active people prefer is yoga as it has a lot of health benefits like weight loss and stress reduction. However, yoga has a complicated relationship with the skin, while it can lead to having healthy, glowing skin, sweating during these sessions could also trigger breakouts. Luckily, there are ways to take care of your skin before and after your Zumba or pilates workout session to avoid skin problems.

Before Your Workout

The golden rule in makeup and exercise is to remove all of it before the session. According to a New-York based dermatologist, wearing full face makeup clogs the pores of your skin that hinder the ability of the skin to breathe, which results into breakouts and irritation. Your mascara or eyeliner can also run into your eyes, which is not only painful but troublesome. Removing makeup before your exercise will help your skin and save you a lot of stress in the future. You can use wipes, but if you really want your face to be clean, then a cleanser is a wise option because it will remove oil, dirt, and other impurities.

During Your Workout

Pay attention to your surroundings and to the equipment you use in the gym or yoga studio. While there are some accessories you can buy for personal use like yoga mats, there are some tools you share with other members as well. In a study conducted in the United States, researchers found that gym equipment is dirtier than a toilet seat. Even if you regularly disinfect your own things, there still might be bacteria on it. It’s better to be safe than sorry, so just avoid touching your face when you exercise. Make your face a hands-off area and just use a towel to pat your face and neck dry.  

After Your Workout

The same study recommended that individuals should get out of their sweaty clothes as the combination of sweat and dirt in it could lead to clogged pores and body acne. While you should take a shower after your workout, better think twice about making it a hot one. David Lefell, the chief dermatologic surgery of Yale School of Medicine, noted that hot water can actually strip the natural oils of your skin. It is recommended to take a short lukewarm water to rinse off.  

As you lose moisture as you sweat, make sure you rehydrate after your workout. While the workout gives you a glowing skin, hydration will keep your skin healthy long after you’ve finished exercising.  Use a moisturizer and drink lots of fluids to help your body recover, and by extension, your skin.

Exercise has a lot of benefits to your health. However, it can easily wreak havoc on your skin if you don’t take care of it.  These easy skin care tips before, during, and after your workout can help your skin stay healthy and glowing.
